Braces

How do braces straighten crooked teeth?

Braces use steady, gentle pressure over time to move teeth into their proper positions. They don't look like they're doing much just sitting there. But in fact, every moment or your orthodontic treatment, there's something happening in your mouth. The brackets we place on your teeth and the main arch wire that connects them are the two main components. The bracket is a piece of specially shaped metal or ceramic that we affix to each tooth. Then we bend the arch wire to reflect your 'ideal" bite-what we want you to look like after treatment. The wire threads through the brackets and, as the wire tries to return to its original shape, it applies pressure to actually move your teeth. Picture your tooth resting in your jaw bone. With pressure on one side from the arch wire, the bone on the other side gives way. The tooth moves. New bone grows in behind. It may look like nothing is happening but we're making a new smile here. Thanks to new materials and procedures, all this happens much quicker than ever before. It's kind of an engineering feat.

Who can perform orthodontics?

While it is perfectly acceptable for you to receive orthodontic treatment from a dentist, many dentists prefer to refer patients to specialized orthodontists at Thangam's who are qualified in the exact field of dentistry relating to the problem.

Bridges and Implants

ARTIFICIAL ROOT FOR YOUR TOOTH

A dental implant is an artificial root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants may be an option for people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason. This dental system, which is patient-friendly and cost effective, includes a miniature titanium implant with a ball shaped head which acts like the root of a tooth and a tiny retaining fixture which acts as a socket. This sensitive procedure is carried out by well experienced implantologist at our healthcare centre.

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges literally bridge the gap created by one or more missing teeth.

A bridge is made up of two crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap. These false teeth are called pontics and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials. Dental bridges are supported by natural teeth or implants.

Crowns and Caps

DENTAL CROWNS & CAPS

A dental crown is a cap that covers a damaged tooth to protect what remains of the tooth structure, providing you with a strong, long-lasting layer of protection against tooth fracture.

Dental crowns are used to treat teeth that have lost a significant part of its structure, which can happen as a result of tooth decay or the failure of a large filling. In some cases, dental crowns can also be used on teeth that have been worn down to the extent of vulnerability.

The evolution of dental crowns

Historically, many materials starting from Gold to various alloys were used to make the crowns, This was convenient as gold and other alloys were easily available & strong. But aesthetically these crowns were not very pleasing. The introduction of porcelain/ceramics in dentistry paved the way to a more aesthetic crowns that matched the shades of the natural tooth.

Dentures

Dental Health and Dentures

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. Two types of dentures are available -- complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures can be either "conventional" or "immediate." Made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal, a conventional denture is ready for placement in the mouth about eight to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed.

Unlike conventional dentures, immediate dentures are made in advance and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed. As a result, the wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period. However, bones and gums shrink over time, especially during the healing period following tooth removal. Therefore a disadvantage of immediate dentures compared with conventional dentures is that they require more adjustments to fit properly during the healing process and generally should only be considered a temporary solution until conventional dentures can be made.

Extractions

TOOTH REMOVAL

If a tooth has been broken or damaged by decay, your dentist will try to fix it with a filling, crown or other dental treatment. But when there's too much damage for the tooth to be repaired, the tooth may need to be extracted — or removed — from its socket in the bone.

Beyond damage and decay, here are some other common reasons for tooth removal:

Some people have extra teeth that block other teeth from coming in.

Sometimes baby teeth don't fall out in time to allow the permanent teeth to come in.

People getting braces may need teeth extracted to create room for the teeth that are being moved into place.

People receiving radiation to the head and neck may need to have teeth in the field of radiation extracted.

People receiving cancer drugs may develop infected teeth because these drugs weaken the immune system. Infected teeth may need to be extracted.

Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, are often extracted either before or after they erupt in the mouth. They commonly come in during the late teens or early 20’s. They need to be removed if they are decayed, infected, or if there is not enough room in the mouth.

Fillngs and Repairs

What is a Filling?

A filling is a way to restore a tooth damaged by decay back to its normal function and shape. When a dentist gives you a filling, he or she first removes the decayed tooth material, cleans the affected area, and then fills the cleaned out cavity with a filling material.

By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, a filling also helps prevent further decay. Materials used for fillings include gold, porcelain, a composite resin (tooth-colored fillings), and an amalgam (an alloy of mercury, silver, copper, tin and sometimes zinc).

What Happens When You get a Filling?

If your dentist decides to fill a cavity, he or she will first remove the decay and clean the affected area. The cleaned-out cavity will then be filled with any of the variety of materials described above.

How Do I Know if I Need a Filling?

Only your dentist can detect whether you have a cavity that needs to be filled. During a checkup, your dentist will use a small mirror to examine the surfaces of each tooth.

Anything that looks abnormal will then be closely checked with special instruments. Your dentist may also X-ray your entire mouth or a section of it. The type of treatment your dentist chooses will depend on the extent of damage caused by decay

Oral Cancer Examinations

The oral cavity consists of lips, tongue, floor of the mouth, retromolar trigone, hard palate, alveolar ridge and buccal mucosa. Cancers of the oral cavity account for approximately one-third of all types of head and neck cancers. Men are twice as likely to get oral cancer as compared to women, and the average age of oral cancer patients is 60-70 years.

There is a strong relationship between the smoking and the development of cancers of the oral cavity. Almost 80-90% of all oral cancer patients have some history of smoking. In fact, tobacco users have 25 times higher risk of developing oral cancer than non-users. Quitting smoking can significantly reduce the risk of oral cancer. This risk is reduced by approximately 50% if the person quit smoking for more than 9 years at a stretch.

Sealants

Dental Health: Sealants

Dental sealant is a thin, plastic coating painted on the chewing surfaces of teeth -- usually the back teeth (the premolars and molars) -- to prevent tooth decay. The sealant quickly bonds into the depressions and grooves of the teeth, forming a protective shield over the enamel of each tooth.

Although thorough brushing and flossing can remove food particles and plaque from smooth surfaces of teeth, they cannot always get into all the nooks and crannies of the back teeth to remove the food and plaque. Sealants protect these vulnerable areas from tooth decay by "sealing out" plaque and food.

Who Should Get Sealants?

Because of the likelihood of developing decay in the depressions and grooves of the premolars and molars, children and teenagers are candidates for sealants. However, adults without decay or fillings in their molars can also benefit from sealants.

Typically, children should get sealants on their permanent molars and premolars as soon as these teeth come in. In this way, the sealants can protect the teeth through the cavity-prone years of ages 6 to 14.

Veneers

Dental Health and Veneers

Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their color, shape, size, or length.

Embed Asset Override

Dental veneers can be made from porcelain or from resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than resin veneers and better mimic the light reflecting properties of natural teeth. You will need to discuss the best choice of veneer material for you with your dentist.

Maxillofacial traumas

Oral and maxillofacial trauma can range from an avulsed tooth as a result of a simple fall, to pan-facial injuries in the context of a polytraumatised patient involved in a road traffic accident. Regardless of aetiology, similar principles apply to all oral and maxillofacial injuries, and this chapter broadly outlines the more common forms of oral and maxillofacial trauma and the options available for their management. Throughout the chapter all references and values are for adult patients unless indicated.

Oral and maxillofacial trauma is common and has several aetiological causes.

Oral and maxillofacial injuries are especially common in cases of polytrauma, such as road traffic accidents.

Initial assessment and care should consist of examining and protecting vital functions and should be carried out systematically.

Smile Designing

By altering the relative size, edge design, or angulation of the front teeth, the final effect may appear "sporty," or "sophisticated." Of course, the enjoyment of all things possible must eventually rub shoulders with the limits of reality. At this point, the cosmetic dentist takes up the consideration of prognosis - the predictability for achieving and maintaining every aspect of the desired outcome. Options may range from limited-scope to all-inclusive, less expensive to more elaborate, invasive to conservative, or durable to shorter term.
